About This Site
My name is Matt Watson, and I am a writer. This is a collection of some of my published material from 2003 to the present, mainly consisting of fantasy football and baseball columns I’ve written for The Roto Times and USAToday.com. While I hope any visitors who stumble upon this site are entertained, the intention behind this site was merely to create an easily-accessible archive for my own benefit. All Roto Times content is copyrighted to CDM Sports.
This collection doesn’t attempt to be comprehensive. For one, I started writing for The Roto Times in January 2000, so it’s missing the first three years of my career as a professional writer. Also, it’s missing everything I’ve ever written for the USA Today/Sports Weekly Fantasy Hot Sheet, a subscription-based site to which I contribute somewhere between 50,000 and 100,000 words a year. And lastly, it’s also missing the dozens of articles I’ve written for the five Roto Times fantasy football and fantasy baseball preview magazines.
I think of this collection as a living, breathing body of work, and one that has shown a lot of improvement over the years. Reading through some of my earlier work, I’m reminded of the progress that I’ve made as a writer. I appear to have come pretty far — in August 2005, I was humbled and honored when my December 2004 column “Jonesing for Yardage” was selected by the Fantasy Sports Writers Association as the “Best Fantasy Football Article in Major Media:”
Best Fantasy Football Article in Major Media –
Winner: Matt Watson, USAToday.com / RotoTimes.com
Article: Jonesing for Yardage* Runner-up: Rob Hurtt, SportingNews.com
** Finalists: John Georgopoulos and Dan Pasquale
This award is presented to the writer of the overall best fantasy football article to appear in any major media outlet, including print and online formats. Major media is defined as a format commonly accepted as a standard in mainstream media. This would include such outlets as Sports Illustrated, ESPN and FOX Sports, USA Today, CBS Sportsline and Sporting News.
In addition to my professional writing, I’ve also recently resumed writing purely for my own enjoyment in the form of a daily weblog called Detroit Bad Boys, where I wax poetic on the Detroit Pistons and the NBA. Despite launching in late October 2005, Detroit Bad Boys quickly captured the attention of an eager audience has been mentioned in the Detroit Free Press, Deadspin, and SLAMonline as being one of the premier Pistons blogs on the internet.
As an experienced writer and editor who has recently become completely self-employed, I’m always receptive to additional sidejobs. I’m a Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to producing content — I’ve done everything from copywriting to weekly columns, editing articles to designing web sites, etc. If you’re looking for a writer — be it a journalist, columnist, copywriter, blogger, or any other title you’ve come up with for a word monkey — chances are I can do it. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
